Electrolysis: Are Treatments Safe?

Electrolysis Laser Hair Removal

If you want to remove body or facial hair permanently, then electrolysis may be right for you. Electrolysis is the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved permanent solution to removing unwanted hair from your body, including your eyebrows, abdomen, thighs, breasts, and legs

During an electrolysis procedure, an electrologist will use a small, thin, medical needle device called an epilator to destroy the growth center of a hair. The needle, often finer than a hair, is inserted into the opening of the hair follicle, where a small electrical current from the needle will destroy the hair cell. Though treatments can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, you will need several appointments to permanently remove all the hair—about every week or every other week for up to a year and a half.

Since electrolysis is a relatively unknown procedure for many, people often question the safety and validity of the process. However, we assure you that electrolysis is safe and much more effective than other temporary hair removal procedures.

Look at some of these quick facts and tips about the safety of electrolysis:

  • Very slight risks come from getting electrolysis, and it stems from using an unsterile needle. Additionally, if the procedure is not done correctly, there are risks of scarring. That’s why it’s crucial that you find a certified/licensed, professional electrolysis practice so you can minimize these risks.
  • To find a good electrologist, look at their qualifications, cleanliness, and hygiene practices, and read recommendations and reviews from other clients. You should also schedule an initial consultation and ask any lingering questions about their policies and experience. It will help you make an informed decision.
  • Electrolysis is generally not painful, though you may feel a little heat and mild tingling from the needle. If you are in discomfort, you can ask your electrologist to turn the settings down or even for a numbing cream to help make you more comfortable throughout the treatment.
  • After a treatment, you may have a slight reddening of the skin, and people with deeper skin tones may have dark spots in the treated area. It is normal and will fade over time—do NOT use bleaching cream over them.
  • There is no recovery time after treatment, so you can return to your normal daily activities immediately after an appointment; however, you may want to avoid sweating, tanning, prolonged exposure to the sun, and applying makeup for 24 hours.
